Severe storms hit East Tennessee Thursday evening

Knoxville and the broader East Tennessee region are under a slight risk for severe weather, with storms forecasted to move through on Thursday, May 8, bringing golf ball-sized hail, damaging winds, and a very small chance of tornadoes. The National Weather Service has issued warnings that hailstones could exceed 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter, making them among the largest seen in the area this season.

Storm timing across East Tennessee

Severe weather is expected to begin in Chattanooga and Oneida as early as 4 p.m., then spread northeast. For Knoxville, the storms will likely begin between 5 and 6 p.m., intensifying between 6 and 8 p.m., with the threat tapering off by around 10 p.m.. Further east, areas like Kingsport and Mountain City will experience storm activity starting closer to 5 or 6 p.m., with conditions calming by midnight.

What to expect during the storm

These thunderstorms will be scattered, but intense, carrying winds up to 65 mph (105 km/h). The primary threats are large hail and strong gusts, although the tornado risk remains low at only 2–4%. Despite the low tornado probability, the size of the hail and the intensity of wind gusts make this a serious weather event, particularly for vehicles, rooftops, and outdoor structures.

Protecting your vehicle from hail damage

If you’re in Knoxville or anywhere in East Tennessee, the best way to shield your vehicle is to move it under cover—a garage, carport, or even a gas station canopy. Without cover, large hail could dent metal, crack windshields, or shatter glass. In urgent situations, even blankets, snow covers, floor mats, or cardboard can be used to add a layer of protection.
