Ozone levels rising across Jacksonville through the weekend

Jacksonville, Florida is experiencing a notable spike in ozone concentrations, prompting the City’s Office of Administrative Services to issue an air quality advisory as of Friday morning. These elevated ozone levels are expected to persist over the next several days, raising health concerns, particularly for vulnerable groups.

Impact of warm and dry weather on air quality

The current atmospheric setup—marked by warm temperatures and dry conditions—is amplifying ozone formation, especially during the afternoon hours when sunlight and heat interact with air pollutants. These conditions are not only expected to continue, but may intensify slightly, worsening ozone pollution levels throughout the Memorial Day weekend.

Who is most at risk

The most affected by this ozone increase include:

Children, older adults over 65, and individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses such as asthma, COPD, and chronic bronchitis. These groups are more susceptible to symptoms triggered by high ozone, including:

Coughing, shortness of breath, headache, and throat irritation.

For those with respiratory conditions, it’s important to follow their treatment plans closely, use preventive inhalers, and keep rescue medication on hand at all times.

Timing outdoor activities for safety

To reduce exposure, early morning hours—before ozone levels peak—are currently the safest window for any outdoor activities. Throughout the afternoon and early evening, levels tend to rise, especially near high-traffic areas and urban centers like Downtown Jacksonville.

Even for healthy individuals, it’s best to keep outdoor exertion to a minimum during peak periods and consider more frequent breaks when outside.

Forecast outlook and air quality trend

This ozone advisory could remain in effect at least through Sunday, with monitoring agencies evaluating whether conditions improve or worsen with potential weather changes. Unless cooler or wetter air masses move in from the Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico, ozone may remain above normal well into next week.

Stay tuned for daily air quality index (AQI) updates and adjust outdoor plans accordingly, especially for the holiday weekend.
