Rainfall to intensify overnight Tuesday into early Wednesday

A powerful storm system is making its way across Maryland, setting the stage for a wet and potentially dangerous Wednesday morning commute. The WJZ First Alert Weather Team has officially issued an Alert Day for Wednesday, warning drivers in Baltimore and surrounding areas to prepare for widespread rain, slick roads, and reduced visibility.

Storm timeline and impacts

Rainfall will begin late Tuesday evening, gradually intensifying after midnight. The heaviest downpours are expected during the early morning hours, just as many residents hit the road. Visibility could drop significantly, and roads may become treacherous, especially along major routes in Central Maryland.

Temperatures will dip into the 50s (around 10–13 °C) overnight, with daytime highs on Wednesday barely reaching the low 60s (around 16 °C) under overcast skies and persistent rainfall. Although the rain will begin to taper off in the afternoon, spotty showers will likely stick around through the evening hours.

Short break in wet weather by Thursday

By Wednesday night, a brief reprieve from the rain is expected, continuing into much of Thursday. While most of the day will stay dry, there’s still a slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm or brief shower in the afternoon. Temperatures will rebound, climbing into the mid to upper 70s (around 24–26 °C).

Second storm system arrives Friday

The wet pattern resumes by late Friday, as another storm system moves into the region. Rain could again be locally heavy, and temperatures will stay in the mid-70s (around 24 °C). This sets the stage for an unsettled start to the weekend.

Saturday looks stormy, with additional showers and potential thunderstorms, driven by an upper-level disturbance. Conditions are expected to improve by Sunday, with drier air returning and a mix of sun and clouds across Maryland.

Looking ahead: sunshine and summer warmth

Next week, residents can finally look forward to a sustained stretch of dry, sunny days. Temperatures will gradually climb into the 80s (around 27–30 °C) early in the week, with highs potentially reaching near 90 °F (32 °C) by Friday.

Derek Beasley, WJZ’s Chief Meteorologist, continues to monitor the evolving conditions closely as the region transitions from spring rains to summer warmth.
