Strong storms expected across Tucson on Sunday
TUCSON, Arizona — Sunday is shaping up to be a pivotal weather day across Southern Arizona, as record rainfall may be possible during a First Alert Action Day (FAA Day). After a dry start to the weekend, the weather pattern is taking a turn, bringing much-needed precipitation to the Tucson area.
Saturday: The calm before the storm
Today, Saturday, June 1, will remain partly cloudy, with just a 10% chance of rain. Temperatures will rise to around 97°F (36°C) during the afternoon, setting the stage for a moisture-laden air mass to move in overnight.
Sunday: FAA Day with widespread rain and thunderstorms
By Sunday, June 2, moisture surges from the south will bring an 80% chance of rain during the night and a 60% chance during the day. Expect heavy showers and thunderstorm activity especially by Sunday afternoon, continuing through Sunday night. Daytime highs will only reach 91°F (33°C), with a morning low near 73°F (23°C) — slightly cooler than recent days due to increased cloud cover and rainfall.
Localized flooding and storm impacts may become a concern, especially in low-lying areas and near normally dry washes. Keep an eye on road conditions, particularly along major routes like Interstate 10 and State Route 77.
Monday: Lingering showers before drying trend
Scattered showers will linger into Monday morning, with a 50% chance of rain before drier air begins to work in. Expect cooler temperatures, with a high of 88°F (31°C) and a morning low around 70°F (21°C). While rainfall won’t be as widespread, intermittent showers could still affect your morning plans.
Tuesday and beyond: Back to the heat
By Tuesday, June 4, isolated showers remain possible with a 20% chance of rain, but skies will begin to clear. Temperatures climb back to 91°F (33°C), with a low of 68°F (20°C). From Wednesday through Friday, the Sonoran heat returns in full force.
Expect sunny skies with daily highs jumping from 92°F (33°C) on Wednesday, to 98°F (37°C) on Thursday, and pushing to a blistering 102°F (39°C) by Friday, June 7. Morning lows will hover in the upper 60s, providing limited overnight relief.
Stay alert, especially Sunday and Monday, as Arizona’s monsoon preview could bring intense weather swings before the dry summer heat reasserts itself later in the week.
