Sunday, June 2, 2025 — HOUSTON, Texas – A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect for southeast Texas, and residents should remain alert as intense weather activity continues to develop throughout Sunday afternoon and evening.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch in place until Sunday at 10 p.m.
The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch valid until 10:00 p.m. CDT. This watch affects multiple counties, including Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Liberty, Waller, and San Jacinto. Storms are likely, and while not every location will be impacted, conditions are favorable for dangerous storms to form quickly.
Active Severe Thunderstorm Warning through 5 p.m.
As of early afternoon, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is already in effect until 5:00 p.m. for parts of southeastern Montgomery County and north central Harris County. These areas are experiencing or are expected to experience tennis-ball-sized hail and damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph.
Storm risk levels elevated across Southeast Texas
The Storm Prediction Center currently classifies Southeast Texas under a Level 1 to Level 2 risk (on a scale from 1 to 5). The highest risk zone lies farther north, where storms are expected to be stronger and more widespread. These storms may feature frequent lightning, large hail, and strong, sudden wind surges.
Know the difference: Watch vs. Warning
A Thunderstorm Watch means that conditions are right for severe storms to possibly develop. It’s a signal to stay weather-aware and follow updates.
A Thunderstorm Warning, on the other hand, means that a storm is actively happening or imminent, and you should take shelter immediately in a safe place away from windows.
Stay safe and stay informed
Houston and the surrounding areas are facing volatile atmospheric conditions this afternoon. Stay indoors, monitor local updates, and be prepared for rapidly changing weather. Authorities emphasize the importance of staying connected and responding quickly to any changes in alerts.
