Saturday evening storm likely spawned a tornado in Jefferson County
On the evening of Saturday, June 7, 2025, a severe thunderstorm swept across Jefferson County, Missouri, likely producing a tornado near De Soto, according to FOX 2 radar data and multiple photos and videos submitted by local viewers.
Probable tornado path: near Vineland and Missouri Highway 21
Preliminary reports suggest that the tornado may have formed near Missouri Highway 21, southwest of De Soto, and tracked just north of Vineland, an unincorporated area in the county.
Noah DeRousse, a FOX 2 viewer, shared a dramatic video showing what appears to be a funnel cloud as seen from Klondike Road in Vineland. Another viewer, Lori Beth Price, submitted a compelling photo showing the storm structure from a distance southwest of De Soto.
Storm prompted a warning without an official watch
The tornado-warned storm system moved through parts of Jefferson, St. Francois, and Washington counties around 7:00 p.m. local time. Notably, the warning was issued without a preceding tornado watch from the National Weather Service, meaning no advance alert was in place indicating favorable conditions for tornado development.
Damage reported, no injuries as of Saturday night
According to John Scullin, a 911 operator in Jefferson County, as of 7:45 p.m. Saturday, no injuries had been reported, although there was noticeable structural damage in parts of the county.
Understanding tornado warnings and watches
Tornado warning: issued when radar detects rotation or a tornado has been spotted. Immediate shelter is advised.
Tornado watch: issued when conditions are favorable for tornado development, though no tornado has been seen or detected by radar yet.
Awaiting official confirmation from the National Weather Service
As of now, the National Weather Service has not confirmed the tornado, but the distinct funnel shape, damage reports, and radar indications strongly suggest that a tornado did indeed touch down near De Soto, Missouri.
