Rain and possible storms threaten Saturday’s Army celebration in Washington
Washington, D.C. is bracing for showers and thunderstorms this Saturday, June 15, casting uncertainty over a day of outdoor festivities and the highly anticipated Army Birthday Parade, marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army. Coincidentally, the day also celebrates former President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday, further boosting public attention and expected turnout.
Stormy skies over the National Mall
The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts a 60% chance of rain throughout the day in the nation’s capital, with the highest risk of heavy rainfall expected between 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., directly overlapping the Army Birthday Parade scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
From 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., forecasters are warning of likely showers and the potential for thunderstorms, which could disrupt not only the parade but also large gatherings across the National Mall. The forecast later shifts to a chance of showers and thunderstorms from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., indicating the possibility of lingering wet weather through the night.
Morning activities begin under cloudy conditions
The celebration is set to kick off with a fitness event at 9:30 a.m., followed by a public festival at 11:00 a.m. Events include interactions with Army astronauts, NFL guests, Medal of Honor recipients, and equipment demonstrations—all happening under mostly cloudy skies.
Earlier in the day, the NWS anticipates a chance of scattered showers until 2:00 p.m., transitioning into intermittent thunderstorm risks between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. Despite the unsettled pattern, activities are expected to proceed with caution depending on real-time weather conditions.
Temperatures climb into the mid-80s
Daytime temperatures will hover around 84°F (29°C), paired with high humidity and limited sunshine. Evening temperatures are forecast to dip to around 67°F (19°C) with persistent cloud cover and unstable atmospheric conditions.
Residents and visitors planning to attend should prepare for sudden downpours, possible lightning, and a moist and muggy atmosphere enveloping Washington, D.C. well into the night.
