Heavy rain soaks central Minnesota
As of Friday afternoon, large parts of Minnesota have received significant rainfall, with central areas recording the heaviest precipitation. The rainfall began Tuesday and has continued through Friday, with more wet weather on the way.
Localized totals surpass 4 inches
According to observations reported to the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, areas such as Willmar, Annandale, and Appleton have seen over 3.5 inches of rain:
- Willmar: 4.52 inches (114.8 mm)
- Annandale: 4.07 inches (103.4 mm)
- Appleton: 3.76 inches (95.5 mm)
- Glencoe: 3.53 inches (89.7 mm)
- Montevideo: 3.47 inches (88.1 mm)
- Spicer: 3.29 inches (83.6 mm)
- Frontenac and Lester Prairie: Over 3 inches each
Twin Cities areas also received considerable amounts, with Minneapolis at 2.57 inches (65.3 mm) and Delano close behind at 2.56 inches (65.0 mm).
Radar estimates exceed reality
Radar-based weather apps like WeatherWise and RadarScope have estimated rain totals up to 19 inches (482.6 mm) in parts of southern Kandiyohi County, especially south of Willmar. However, the National Weather Service clarifies that these figures are severely overestimated. Ground-based reports suggest more realistic totals around 7–9 inches (177.8–228.6 mm).
Flooding concerns persist
While no official flood warnings are in effect, the NWS highlights the potential for flash flooding and urban ponding into the upcoming week, particularly in central and southwestern counties. So far, the most reported impacts involve minor street ponding in Willmar, with little major flooding noted elsewhere.
The system remains active, and further moderate to heavy rainfall is anticipated into the weekend and early next week, especially across central Minnesota.
