Chicago, Illinois weather update – Monday, June 30, 2025
Monday afternoon brings renewed chances for scattered strong to severe storms across the Chicago area, just hours after intense cells swept through Lake and Cook Counties in northeastern Illinois. According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, on-and-off showers and isolated thunderstorms may continue to pop up throughout the region, with development starting around 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., and storm activity becoming more widespread between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m..
“Not everyone will see storms,” said meteorologist Alicia Roman, “but if you do, it could get pretty gusty.”
The day began warm and dry, with temperatures climbing into the mid-to-upper 80s (around 29–31 °C), and high dew points making conditions feel oppressively humid. A cold front pushing through overnight is expected to drop humidity levels by Tuesday, offering a brief break from the muggy air.
The most vulnerable areas through the day include Lake and Cook Counties in Illinois, as well as parts of northwest Indiana. As the evening progresses, storms are likely to shift east and south, spreading across a wider area.
The Storm Prediction Center placed the entire Chicago metro under a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) for severe weather Monday. The main threats from any developing storms include damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph (about 96 km/h), heavy downpours, and frequent lightning. While storms will be scattered and inconsistent, Roman emphasized they could still become intense where they do develop.
Tuesday is expected to bring quieter, less humid conditions. However, heat and humidity will rebuild starting Thursday and last into the weekend. Forecast models suggest dry weather for the Fourth of July holiday on Friday, ideal for outdoor plans.
Still, scattered storms could return by Saturday, according to Roman.
