Severe heat expected in Massachusetts on Sunday and Monday
NEW YORK, Saturday, July 5, 2025 — The National Weather Service has issued an updated heat advisory that will be in effect from 7 a.m. on Sunday, July 6, through 8 p.m. on Monday, July 7, for a large portion of Massachusetts. The advisory includes Northern Worcester, Southern Worcester, Franklin, Middlesex, Essex, Hampshire, Hampden, Norfolk, Suffolk, Bristol and Plymouth counties.
According to the weather service, heat index values are expected to range between 95°F and 100°F (35°C to 38°C), with the highest values forecast for Monday afternoon.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity may result in dangerous heat-related illnesses, especially for individuals without access to air conditioning or those spending extended time outdoors.
The weather service continues to warn that prolonged exposure to these extreme conditions could lead to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke, particularly among the elderly, children, and individuals with existing health conditions.
Heat-related health risks rise sharply when humidity pushes the apparent temperature to such high levels. The urban centers of Boston, Worcester, and areas across Eastern Massachusetts may be particularly vulnerable due to the urban heat island effect, which traps warmth in densely built areas.
Residents in the affected counties are urged to take the heat advisory seriously, remain aware of changing conditions, and limit outdoor activity during the peak afternoon hours. The weather service emphasizes that the situation could be particularly hazardous for outdoor workers, with recommendations including frequent shaded breaks and access to cooling stations when possible.
As the heat wave continues to develop, further updates and extended alerts may follow for Massachusetts and the greater New England region throughout the weekend.
