Strong thunderstorms and damaging winds threaten Lower Michigan

Wednesday, July 17, 2025 — NEW YORK (10:30 AM EDT)
Today could mark the final day of intense summer heat and humidity across Michigan, as a cold front is set to sweep through the region late this evening. While that front may bring cooler, drier air, it’s also expected to trigger potentially severe thunderstorms, especially in the Lower Peninsula.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning of two rounds of storms: a few non-severe thunderstorms this afternoon, followed by a second wave later this evening that carries a greater risk for severe weather.

Lower Michigan faces increased severe weather potential

According to NWS meteorologists in Grand Rapids, this evening’s storms may become severe, with the primary threat being wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph (96–113 km/h). These damaging winds may also be accompanied by heavy rain, particularly in West Michigan, which has been placed in a higher risk zone, marked in yellow on the latest forecast map.

“A few thunderstorms will be possible this afternoon, but those are expected to be sub-severe,” NWS meteorologists stated. “An additional line of storms is likely later this evening. Those storms could become severe with gusty winds 60–70 mph the biggest threat, and locally heavy rain is possible, too.”

Northern Lower Michigan: Heavy rain and strong winds on the radar

The threat increases even further moving into northern Lower Michigan, where storm activity is expected to ramp up significantly this afternoon into the night.

Forecasters from the NWS office in Gaylord reported that “storm coverage is set to increase considerably across northern lower this afternoon.” The agency is monitoring a complex of storms that could bring torrential rainfall and strong, gusty winds as it tracks through areas including Traverse City and surrounding regions.

Earlier this week, Tuesday’s weather already brought intense thunderstorm activity across the northern and western Upper Peninsula, setting the stage for today’s volatile conditions further south.

Stay alert if you’re in Michigan today, especially across the Lower Peninsula, as the state braces for a dramatic weather shift and the possibility of severe evening storms.
