Saturday is shaping up to be a gorgeous summer day across Connecticut, but the calm won’t last long. Meteorologists are warning of two separate rounds of thunderstorms coming in on Sunday, with the second wave potentially turning severe—especially across southern and northern parts of the state.
According to the National Weather Service, northern Connecticut should brace for “two rounds of strong thunderstorms and heavy rain” on Sunday. The first system is expected to sweep through during the morning, focusing on areas near the south coast, where heavy downpours and localized street flooding may become the primary concern. Later in the afternoon and evening, a second round of storms could develop, and this one brings greater potential for damaging winds.
Down in southern Connecticut, the forecast echoes similar risks. The National Weather Service notes that “isolated showers and storms are possible late Saturday night, followed by a more organized batch Sunday afternoon as a cold front pushes through. This second round could be severe, with wind gusts over 58 mph, along with intense rainfall in some spots.
Saturday’s conditions, meanwhile, are expected to be comfortable and dry, with sunshine dominating the skies. Meteorologists from WFSB 3 TV described the day as “feeling amazing,” noting that temperatures will be 10 to 15 degrees cooler than they were on Friday. However, clouds will begin building in the afternoon as a warm front moves in from the west, setting the stage for overnight activity.
On Sunday morning, expect a first round of showers and isolated storms, especially along the shoreline. This system could bring gusty winds, lightning, and heavy bursts of rain in scattered areas. Humidity levels will briefly spike following the morning storms, followed by a temporary lull in the activity.
After 2 PM—possibly even closer to 4 PM—a second wave of storms is forecast to arrive. These storms may be strong to severe, with frequent lightning, damaging wind gusts, and even the chance for large hail. Flash flooding in poor drainage areas is also on the table. While the tornado threat remains very low, it is not entirely zero, according to WFSB 3 TV meteorologists.
