High pressure weakens, temperatures return to seasonal normals
Over the past week, California has endured a notable heat wave, especially across San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley, and Santa Clarita, where daytime highs surged well above seasonal averages. This rise was attributed to a persistent high-pressure system that amplified temperatures across Southern California.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), that system is now beginning to weaken, opening the door for cooler air to move in. As a result, temperatures in much of Los Angeles County are expected to drop between 70°F and 79°F (21°C and 26°C) in the coming days, bringing much-needed relief to the region.
Desert regions remain hot through the weekend
Despite the break in the heat for coastal and valley areas, desert communities will continue to experience extreme temperatures throughout the weekend. Areas like Palm Springs and parts of the Mojave Desert will likely stay above 100°F (38°C) as the influence of the retreating high-pressure system lingers.
Unstable weather patterns head east: Texas to New England
While Southern California sees a pleasant cooldown, the weather pattern shift will bring instability elsewhere in the country. In Texas, cities including Dallas and Fort Worth are bracing for strong thunderstorms on Saturday, which could bring heavy rain, hail, and damaging winds.
Farther northeast, from New York through New England, intense wind gusts are forecasted, with speeds that may exceed 50 mph (80 km/h). The stormy conditions are expected to taper off by Sunday and Monday, just in time for residents to enjoy the Memorial Day holiday under calmer skies.
