Severe storm triggers tornado warning across Central Virginia
A violent thunderstorm ignited tornado warnings across several Central Virginia counties on the evening of Friday, May 30, causing urgent alerts and concern in the region.
At 7:37 p.m., a severe thunderstorm system, with the potential to generate a tornado, was detected near Newland, sparking warnings from the National Weather Service.
Richmond County was officially placed under a tornado warning until 8:15 p.m., while other counties — Chesterfield, Amelia, Dinwiddie, Nottoway, King and Queen, and Essex — had already been under similar warnings earlier in the evening.
Atmospheric instability intensified rapidly during the early evening hours, with the storm showing classic signs of rotation. A resident in Hanover County captured striking photos of a swirling cloud, a potential indicator of tornadic activity, as the system moved through neighboring areas.
Residents across the affected region were strongly urged to seek immediate shelter. The guidance emphasized moving to a basement or a small interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows, to minimize risk from flying debris.
The storm system’s reach underscores the volatile spring weather patterns gripping Virginia, as warm, moist air from the south clashes with cooler air masses, setting the stage for explosive storm development.
As the weekend continues, weather conditions in Central Virginia remain under close observation for any further signs of instability.
