Two rounds of rain heading across Michigan
Michigan is gearing up for two distinct waves of rain this week, bringing widespread but generally moderate precipitation across the state. Both systems will deliver moisture to large areas, though totals and timing will vary depending on location.
First rain system: Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday evening
The first rain system begins its southeastward sweep across Michigan from Tuesday afternoon, continuing through Wednesday afternoon.
For southern Lower Michigan, including areas like Lansing, Ann Arbor, and Kalamazoo, Wednesday morning is when the rain is expected to make its entrance. The NOAA radar forecast indicates that the rain will be fairly uniform, but not torrential for most.
By late Wednesday afternoon, thunderstorms may develop along the frontal boundary. According to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), there is a 5% probability of isolated severe wind gusts in the Ann Arbor–Detroit–Southeast Michigan corridor, particularly Wednesday afternoon and evening. While the risk is low, some localized gusty winds are possible.
Rainfall totals from the first system
Rainfall totals for the first event are expected to vary:
- Upper Peninsula: Around 1 inch (25 mm), which will help reduce the wildfire risk.
- Northwest Lower Michigan, including Traverse City: Between 0.5 inch and 1 inch (13–25 mm).
- Southern two-thirds of Lower Michigan: Mostly 0.25 to 0.5 inch (6–13 mm), though southeast regions could exceed 0.5 inch (13 mm) during storm redevelopment Wednesday afternoon.
Second rain system: Friday into early Saturday
The second rainmaker is expected to arrive in southern Michigan by Friday, affecting areas along and south of I-94, including Jackson, Adrian, and Detroit. This system should exit by early Saturday morning. Some showers could extend slightly north of I-94, depending on how the front evolves.
Combined rainfall totals: A good soaking for Michigan
The combined rainfall from both systems is projected to be quite beneficial for the entire state. In far southern Michigan, total precipitation by early Saturday could range from 1 inch to 2 inches (25–50 mm).
This is well-timed, as early June is when vegetation demands roughly 1 inch of rain per week. Mother Nature appears to be stepping in right on schedule to support healthy plant growth.
Stay updated through the week, as storm strength, location, and rain amounts may still shift slightly based on evolving atmospheric conditions.
