Air quality in Lansing on Friday, June 6
LANSING, Michigan — As of Friday morning, June 6, residents across the Lower Peninsula continue to breathe air affected by wildfire smoke drifting from Canada, although conditions are gradually improving, especially in the Upper Peninsula and northern Michigan.
According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), an Air Quality Advisory remains in effect for all counties in the Lower Peninsula, as fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations could still reach levels considered “unhealthy for sensitive groups” on the Air Quality Index (AQI).
When will the air finally clear in Lansing and beyond?
EGLE’s MiAir Division expects significant improvement by Sunday, June 8, particularly as a frontal system arrives, helping disperse lingering smoke. However, officials warn that models suggest a possible resurgence of smoke early next week, depending on wind patterns and continued wildfire activity in Canada.
Current air quality levels in Michigan cities
As of 9:00 a.m. on June 6, AirNow reported the following PM2.5 AQI readings:
- Lansing: 81, classified as moderate, which means generally acceptable air quality, though sensitive individuals (such as those with asthma or heart conditions) should take precautions.
- Detroit: 117, unhealthy for sensitive groups
- Ann Arbor: 135, unhealthy for sensitive groups
- Coldwater, Grand Rapids, Midland, St. Joseph: in the moderate range (PM2.5 between 82 and 94)
- Gaylord, Traverse City, Newberry, Ludington, Marquette, Ironwood: in the moderate to good range
In contrast, AccuWeather measured a higher PM2.5 level of 111 in Lansing, indicating air that may be unhealthy even for healthy individuals if exposed for extended periods.
What PM2.5 means for your health
PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter measuring 2.5 micrometers or smaller—tiny enough to penetrate deep into the lungs. These particles are common in wildfire smoke, soot, dust, and air pollution. While invisible to the naked eye, they are small enough to pass into the bloodstream, raising significant health concerns, particularly for:
- Children
- Seniors
- People with heart, lung, or autoimmune conditions
- Low-income individuals without access to indoor air filtration
How Lansing residents can monitor air quality
To stay informed, locals can consult several online resources:
- MiAir Quality Index Dashboard (by EGLE): Provides real-time AQI readings across Michigan.
- AirNow.gov: Search by ZIP Code to see current conditions in your area.
- AccuWeather: Offers an AQI feature with detailed info about local air pollutants.
Wildfire smoke forecast and concerns going forward
Although skies are clearing over northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, EGLE warns of the potential return of smoke by early next week, depending on shifting weather systems. This follows reports of 79 uncontrolled wildfires still burning in Canada as of May 30, especially in Ontario, Manitoba, and Alberta—regions under states of emergency due to persistent fire conditions.
Health advice for humans and pets
Sensitive populations are strongly encouraged to stay indoors, run air purifiers or AC units (with MERV-13 filters or better), and avoid cooking, smoking, or using candles indoors, as these activities can further pollute indoor air.
Pets, too, are at risk. According to State Veterinarian Nora Wineland, animals may experience respiratory distress, eye irritation, or lethargy. To protect them:
- Keep pets inside, especially during high smoke hours.
- Limit exercise outdoors.
- Ensure good air circulation indoors using AC units or purifiers.
What does an air quality advisory mean?
An advisory is issued when air quality is forecasted to hit “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” across multiple monitoring sites. If air quality worsens further into the “Unhealthy” or “Very Unhealthy” range, official alerts may follow.
Forecast beyond the weekend
While conditions are expected to improve steadily through Sunday, the possibility of more smoke returning early next week means continued monitoring is essential. The situation is dynamic, and forecast confidence for next week remains low, according to the MiAir Division.
