Fog advisory and driving conditions in Southern Connecticut
Southern Connecticut woke up under a special weather statement from the National Weather Service, in effect until 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
Pockets of dense fog have formed across New Haven, Stamford, Stratford, Derby, and nearby areas. Visibility has dropped sharply in some zones, reaching as low as 0.25 miles. This has made morning travel particularly dangerous, especially on major routes such as I-91, I-95, and Route 8, already affected by congestion and emergency roadwork.
Drivers navigating these areas were advised to use low-beam headlights, reduce speed, and maintain extra space between vehicles.
Timeline of Tuesday’s storm system
As Tuesday progressed, meteorologists from WFSB 3 TV highlighted a storm system advancing across Southern Connecticut, increasing the likelihood of rain mixed with embedded thunderstorms. The most intense weather activity was projected between late morning and early afternoon, strategically avoiding both the AM and PM commutes.
From early afternoon through sunset, skies were expected to gradually clear from west to east, though a weak cold front may still trigger an isolated thunderstorm near sundown.
The temperature was expected to top out in the upper 60s to low 70s (around 68–72°F / 20–22°C), with a low-level risk for severe weather. Though rated as a “level one” event, residents were urged to remain alert, especially if skies turned threatening.
Traffic delays and roadwork impacts
As of 2:07 p.m. Tuesday, several delays and closures were reported:
New Haven:
A multi-vehicle crash on I-91 Northbound between Exits 8 and 9 closed the two left lanes, backing up traffic to Exit 5 (1.6 miles total).
Stamford:
I-95 Southbound saw delays between Exits 8 and 6, with congestion stretching nearly 2 miles.
Stratford:
Route 113 (Lordship Blvd) remained closed in both directions due to emergency construction.
Woodbridge, Derby, Shelton, and Naugatuck also reported lane closures and ramp blockages tied to bridge safety projects and road maintenance, especially on Route 8 and Route 15.
