Extreme heat in southern Arizona intensifies for Father’s Day

A dangerous dome of extreme heat is expanding across southern Arizona, with temperatures surging just in time for Father’s Day weekend. Residents from Tucson to Cochise County should brace for relentless heat, as highs soar well beyond 110°F (43.3°C).

Heat watch in effect from Saturday through Monday

An Extreme Heat Watch is officially in place from Saturday morning, June 14, through Monday evening, June 16, across most of southern Arizona. This includes the Tucson metro area, Santa Cruz County, and Cochise County, where triple-digit highs will become the norm. Afternoon peaks will likely hit 111°F to 114°F (43.9°C to 45.6°C) in several locations.

Overnight lows are forecast to offer little relief, dropping only into the upper 70s to lower 80s (25–28°C), maintaining stress on the body even after sunset.

Heat health risks on the rise

This level of heat significantly elevates the risk for heat-related illness, especially for outdoor workers, the elderly, and young children. The National Weather Service strongly urges all to stay indoors during peak hours and remain hydrated. Exposure to direct sunlight may become dangerous within minutes during the early to midafternoon hours.

Localized impacts in Cochise County

Forecasts for Cochise County reflect highs between 107°F and 110°F (41.7°C to 43.3°C). Douglas, Bisbee, and Sierra Vista will experience intense daytime heat, compounded by light overnight winds and elevated humidity in valleys, leading to uncomfortable nighttime conditions.

Stay informed

This extreme heat episode marks the beginning of what could be a prolonged and hazardous warm spell for southern Arizona. All residents are advised to monitor local forecasts, especially from KGUN 9 Tucson News and official weather alert systems, to track any changes or escalations in heat warnings throughout the weekend.
