Hot and humid weather continues in the Metro Detroit area this Sunday, with temperatures soaring to around 92°F (33°C) and heat index values nearing 100°F (38°C) during the afternoon. Sunshine will dominate the morning hours, but storm chances rise quickly into the afternoon and evening as a cold front approaches.
Strong thunderstorms are possible across southeast Michigan, particularly late in the day. These storms may bring damaging wind gusts and torrential downpours. While this won’t be a widespread severe weather outbreak, isolated severe cells are likely, and any storm that forms could intensify quickly under the hot and humid conditions.
Sunday night, expect partly cloudy skies and the potential for lingering showers and storms. Overnight lows will fall to around 68°F (20°C), offering only modest relief from the daytime heat.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Chantal is expected to make landfall in the Carolinas by Sunday afternoon, bringing with it the risk of flooding rains across eastern North Carolina. Tropical Storm Warnings remain in effect along the coastal Carolinas through Sunday morning.
Cooler and drier air arrives by Monday as the front clears the region. Highs dip to around 82°F (28°C) under mostly cloudy skies, with overnight lows near 64°F (18°C). Tuesday looks dry and seasonable, with partly sunny skies and temperatures holding steady in the mid-80s°F (around 29°C).
Looking ahead, the next chance for rain and thunderstorms returns by Wednesday and Thursday, though temperatures remain seasonable through the middle of the week. Expect a return of a sun-cloud mix by Friday, and yet another round of scattered showers by the start of the next weekend.
Sunday will bring a mix of sunshine and storms, so residents in Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Flint should remain weather-aware, especially in the afternoon and evening hours.
