Cold front triggers severe rip currents and high waves on Lake Michigan
CHICAGO, Illinois — Sunday, July 7, 2025, 9:00 a.m. (local time) — A rapidly moving cold front is sweeping across the Chicago area, triggering not just a risk of strong thunderstorms, but also life-threatening lake conditions along Lake Michigan.
The National Weather Service has issued a high-alert advisory for the entire lakeshore stretch from the Wisconsin-Illinois border into northwest Indiana, where wave heights are expected to surge between 4 and 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 meters) during the afternoon hours. Accompanying these wave swells will be dangerous rip currents, particularly hazardous as winds quickly shift from the north once the front arrives.
Forecast data shows that the front will “race down” the coastline Sunday afternoon, with the weather deteriorating rapidly after 3 p.m., pushing in cooler air, strong gusts, and unstable water conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a stark warning, noting that fatalities have occurred in similar conditions in the past.
As of 11:00 a.m. Sunday, green flag conditions remained at most Chicago beaches, but that status is expected to change quickly as the system pushes through the region. Swimmers and beachgoers are being warned to stay out of the water and avoid breakwalls and piers, especially in the mid-to-late afternoon timeframe.
The NBC 5 Storm Team is also tracking the cold front’s inland effects, noting that it will bring a heightened chance of thunderstorms, some of which may generate gusty winds, heavy downpours, and localized flooding. Motorists in the Chicago metropolitan area are urged to exercise extreme caution, especially in low-lying urban zones prone to quick accumulation of runoff.
Behind the front, a notable drop in temperature is forecast. Overnight lows will dip into the mid-60s °F (around 18 °C), offering a sharp contrast to recent warm conditions. On Monday, cooler temperatures will continue, with daytime highs in the low 80s °F (around 27 °C), and cooler breezes expected along the lakeshore.
