Meteorologist Sven Sundgaard is tracking a volatile weather setup across Minnesota and Wisconsin today, with heavy rainfall, humid heat, and dramatic cooling all on the map.
Hot and humid across southern Minnesota
Expect a sweltering Tuesday across southern Minnesota, especially in the Twin Cities, where a heat advisory is in effect. Temperatures will climb well into the upper 80s to low 90s°F (31–34°C), with sticky dew points making it feel even warmer. Conditions are ripe for strong thunderstorms to erupt by afternoon and evening.
Frontal boundary to trigger storms and heavy rainfall
A frontal boundary slicing through central Minnesota will act as a trigger for scattered storms, which will continue through tonight and into Wednesday. The heaviest rainfall totals are expected from east-central Minnesota into northwest Wisconsin, but the exact location will depend on where thunderstorms cluster.
Forecast models suggest several inches of rain are likely, particularly in a corridor from Cambridge and Pine City in Minnesota, stretching into Hayward and Spooner in Wisconsin. While the severe weather risk remains slight, the main concern is localized flash flooding, especially in areas that experience multiple rounds of storms.
Much cooler Wednesday with lingering showers
Behind the front, cooler air will rapidly spread across Minnesota. By Wednesday, temperatures will drop into the 60s°F (15–20°C) north and low 70s°F (21–23°C) south. Expect persistent clouds, occasional showers, and a much more comfortable air mass.
Drier air and clearing skies Thursday
By Thursday, dew points will tumble, ushering in crisper, drier conditions. Skies will begin to clear from west to east, setting up a calmer transition toward the end of the week.
Additional rain Friday night before a quieter weekend
Another disturbance may bring showers Friday night, but clearing skies are anticipated by Saturday, leading into what looks like a more stable and seasonable weekend across Minnesota and Wisconsin.
