CHICAGO — After a brief lull, severe weather is poised to make a return across Chicagoland this Saturday morning, marking a muggy and unsettled start to the weekend. A slow-moving storm system, creeping in from the west, is forecast to bring strong thunderstorms, gusty winds, and the possibility of hail to much of the Chicago metro area.
Currently, the National Weather Service has placed the entire region under a Level 2 out of 5 – a slight risk – for severe thunderstorms, which, despite being on the lower end of the scale, still brings meaningful risk.
Storm timeline for Saturday
The main window for potentially severe conditions extends from around 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (local time), though showers and storms could develop earlier, especially in the predawn hours. As the system gradually moves east, it’s expected to fully enter Chicagoland during the mid-morning timeframe.
Throughout the morning and into early afternoon, expect heavy downpours, frequent lightning, and strong wind gusts, which could lead to localized damage. Hail is also possible in some isolated pockets of the storm line. The system’s slow progression means the region may remain under stormy skies into the early afternoon, particularly areas stretching toward northwest Indiana.
Looking into Saturday evening
While the most intense storm activity should clear the Chicago area by mid to late afternoon, lingering instability could allow for additional storms to pop up through Saturday evening. The evening hours may remain wet and overcast, especially for those along and southeast of the I-80 corridor.
Temperatures are expected to remain elevated, with highs reaching the upper 80s°F (around 31°C) and humidity levels pushing the heat index even higher.
