RICHMOND, Virginia — As of this Saturday, July 19, a severe thunderstorm warning is now in effect for parts of Central Virginia, while a thunderstorm watch covers a broader area through tonight.
The National Weather Service has officially issued a severe thunderstorm warning through 4:15 p.m. for Buckingham County, Fluvanna County, and the City of Charlottesville. This warning indicates that dangerous storms are either currently impacting or developing near these zones.
At the same time, a severe thunderstorm watch is active across a wide stretch of Central Virginia and will remain in place until 10:00 p.m. This includes the following areas: Albemarle, Amelia, Brunswick, Caroline, Charles City, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Essex, Greene, Greensville, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, King and Queen, King William, Louisa, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Nottoway, Orange, Powhatan, Prince George, Prince Edward, Richmond County, and Sussex County, along with the cities of Charlottesville, Emporia, Hopewell, and Richmond.
According to the NWS, these storms are capable of producing strong wind gusts, damaging hail, and possibly isolated flooding. Impacts may include downed trees, damaged vehicles, and power outages in some locations.
Temperatures today are hovering in the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit (around 31–34°C), which adds to the instability fueling these intense weather conditions.
