New Jersey is in for an unsettled weekend, with scattered thunderstorms and sweltering humidity forecast for both Saturday and Sunday across the Garden State. According to the National Weather Service, the most intense rainfall is expected to target southern areas, especially in Cape May, Atlantic, and parts of Cumberland and Salem counties, close to the Delaware Bay.
This Saturday morning, light showers may brush across Cape May County, but the main concern is for stronger storms developing in the afternoon and continuing into the evening hours. A new wave of atmospheric instability is expected to pass over New Jersey, increasing the coverage and intensity of showers and thunderstorms as the day progresses.
Temperatures will rise into the low 80s Fahrenheit (around 27°C), with a noticeable spike in humidity making conditions feel warmer and more uncomfortable by mid-afternoon.
Sunday raises the stakes, with a higher chance of severe weather, particularly in northern New Jersey, where flash flooding could become an issue. Heat index values could soar close to 100°F (38°C) in parts of South Jersey, as air temperatures climb into the upper 80s Fahrenheit (around 31°C). The Storm Prediction Center has placed northern counties under a slight risk for severe thunderstorms, while the rest of the state faces a marginal risk, meaning localized downpours and strong wind gusts are possible.
A cold front is expected to sweep across the region late Sunday night, ushering in cooler and less humid air. By Monday, residents can expect a noticeable change, with more comfortable weather, partly sunny skies, and temperatures settling in the low to mid-80s Fahrenheit (around 28°C).
Looking ahead, the rest of the workweek should remain largely dry, though humidity is forecast to creep back up by Thursday and Friday, potentially setting the stage for another round of storms late in the week.
Current radar imagery shows scattered storm activity developing mainly in southern counties, with more widespread coverage likely this afternoon. Stay weather-aware throughout the weekend as conditions can shift quickly.
