Illinois is bracing for the return of high humidity and summer heat, just as the Fourth of July approaches. After a brief midweek break in muggy conditions, the National Weather Service forecasts a steady buildup of heat, humidity, and scattered storms toward the holiday weekend. While no washouts are currently expected, storm activity may interrupt outdoor plans, including fireworks shows across Illinois.

A humid start to the week with scattered storms

Today, Monday July 1, temperatures in Illinois will climb to around 90°F (32°C). With humid air already in place, this sets the stage for scattered thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon and evening. According to meteorologists, some of these storms may become strong, producing damaging winds and frequent lightning. The heat index could reach 95°F (35°C), making conditions feel even more oppressive.

Monday night, storm chances remain elevated before tapering off after 10 p.m. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a low near 66°F (19°C). Winds will shift to the northwest, blowing between 5 and 10 mph.

Tuesday relief before heat builds again

Tuesday July 2 offers temporary relief, with lower humidity and a high near 85°F (29°C). Skies will stay sunny, and northwest breezes will bring a noticeably drier air mass. The night will be mostly clear, with lows dipping to 65°F (18°C), and winds shifting gradually from the northwest to the west.

Heat intensifies by midweek

Wednesday July 3 sees the return of warmer air, as temperatures climb again to near 88°F (31°C). Under sunny skies, the heat will feel more intense with west winds gusting up to 15 mph. The night will remain mostly clear, with lows around 67°F (19°C).

Fourth of July forecast: hot, humid, with storm chances

By Thursday July 4, the summer heat returns in full force. Afternoon highs will reach 91°F (33°C), with humid air pushing the heat index even higher. While most of the day will be mostly sunny, there’s a 20 percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms, which could impact fireworks displays scheduled across Illinois. Nighttime conditions will remain partly cloudy, with a low around 70°F (21°C).

Friday: lingering heat and more storm potential

Friday July 5 continues the hot and humid trend, with highs near 93°F (34°C) and a possible heat index over 100°F (38°C). The day looks mostly sunny, but unsettled weather may develop later. Overnight, skies will be partly cloudy, and temperatures will stay warm, with lows hovering around 74°F (23°C).

The week’s forecast highlights a pattern of building heat, high humidity, and spotty storms, especially toward the Fourth of July holiday.
