A severe thunderstorm watch has been officially issued for a wide portion of Central Virginia, remaining in effect until 9:00 p.m. EDT this Tuesday evening.
As of this afternoon, strong thunderstorms are actively forming across the region, bringing the potential for heavy downpours, frequent lightning, and damaging wind gusts. The National Weather Service warns that these storms could become increasingly intense through the evening hours.
The areas currently under watch include Albemarle, Amelia, Buckingham, Caroline, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Essex, Fluvanna, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, King and Queen, King William, Lancaster, Louisa, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Orange, Powhatan, and Richmond Counties, along with the City of Richmond.
Widespread storm activity is expected to continue between 3:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. EDT, with wind gusts exceeding 60 mph (96 km/h) possible in some locations. Localized flooding from intense rainfall and isolated power outages may occur as the storms pass through.
